Learn, Unlearn, Relearn.

I came across this quote in the staffroom at my school today. It did stop me from walking  as if someone was reading it out loud, trying to catch my attention.

You’re living in the 21st century. You must be well-educated. You can simply access to anything to get education. Life is much easier for you kids these days. There are no excuses!

I think that’s what Mr. Toffler is trying to say, correct me if I’m wrong readers.

Believe me, I hadn’t notice the poster before and I have been studying there for almost three years now. It took me practically ten minutes to convince myself to agree with him. Why ten minutes? Here’s why –

  • I felt guilty.

–  The last word of the sentence is relearn. As I glared at the word, I have never felt this way before: the intense feeling of guilty of not wanting to learn something all over again and again, to make myself wholly understand and remember it for eternity. Let’s take -Physics subject as an example. Yes, it is one of the those subjects that I really need to relearn. Frankly, I had given up on it before as I loathed the subject so much. I don’t enjoy the classes and it’s kind of sad how used to getting scolded by my teacher I am. Perhaps, it’s time for a change?

  • ” Unlearn what?? ”  I asked myself.

Unlearn what is untrue. Oh, those ” things ” on social media. Also, once those ignorant people see you fail, they will say this to you  ” You know, it’s not a good sign if you fail… “

Nope – not true. I received that a lot. And a lot of times it made me feel not worthy anymore. Yet, I survived. Failing is a fabulous way for you to learn more about yourself. When we try things and they don’t work, it’s an opportunity to figure out why it didn’t work and how you can do it differently to succeed. The most successful people in the world have failed a million times. Ask yourself: are you failing enough?

  • And “ ..but those who cannot learn…”

– It is agreed that to stay relevant to the constantly changing environment one must not only know how to read and write but also need to know how to learn, unlearn, and relearn.

Thank you, have a good day. N

  1. Was it Einstein who states that if you can’t explain isomething to an eight-year-old you don’t understand it yourself.
